Tips for a conscious wardrobe
A responsible wardrobe? It's all about the right choices! By being smart about your clothes, you not only save money, but you also contribute to a better environment. Here are a few smart tips to make your wardrobe more responsible!
1. Invest in timeless pieces
Trends come and go, but a timeless base always remains stylish. Choose classic items, these pieces will last for years and are easy to combine. At Bamboo Basics you will find items that are timeless, and our colors are also not fashion-sensitive.
2. Choose quality over quantity
Cheaper clothing may seem attractive at first glance, but these items often wear out faster. Instead, invest in quality items that last longer. Bamboo, for example, is a strong material that does not wear out quickly and also feels comfortable on the skin. To make our product stronger and give it a longer lifespan, we use a portion (28%) of organic cotton.
3. Buy second-hand or vintage
Second-hand clothing? That is a responsible choice with a unique edge! Not only do you give an outfit a second life, but you also help the environment. On platforms such as Vinted and Marktplaats you will find a treasure trove of clothing, and vintage shops are full of beautiful, well-preserved gems!
4. Support brands that produce responsibly
Choose brands that are transparent about their production methods. Bamboo Basics is OEKO-TEX 100 certified. This means that our products do not contain any harmful substances for people and the environment. Read more about OEKO-TEX here . To make bamboo yarn, two types of chemicals are needed in the process. These do not end up in the environment because we use Tanboocel . They use a circular process in which 100% of the chemicals used are collected and recycled.
Bamboo also naturally does not need insecticides or pesticides to grow. In contrast, cotton is responsible for no less than 11% of all pesticides and 25% of all insecticides used worldwide each year. A major problem in the cultivation of (mainly) cotton is the use of pesticides. Pesticides are used extensively in intensive cotton cultivation in particular to prevent various pests and diseases, and this all has a huge negative impact on the local environment. When growing bamboo, no pesticides are needed to combat pests or prevent diseases. This makes a huge difference in terms of impact on people, animals and the environment. Read more about this.
5. Take good care of your clothes
By taking good care of your clothes, you extend their lifespan. Wash at low temperatures: 30 to 40 degrees is enough. Bamboo likes cold washes! It can be tumble dried, but it also dries quickly in the air. That is better for your wallet and the environment. If you do put it in the tumble dryer, there is a chance of shrinkage or damaged fibres – just like with cotton. Use the 'cotton' programme on your washing machine for the best results.
6. Exchange or borrow clothes
Do you have a special occasion and don't want to buy something new? Consider borrowing or swapping clothes with friends. There are also initiatives such as clothing libraries where you can rent clothes temporarily.
7. Repair and upcycle
Does a piece of clothing have a small damage? Don't throw it away right away, but repair it! Small adjustments such as replacing buttons or repairing a tear can breathe new life into an item. You can also upcycle old clothing into something new, such as a tote bag.
8. Buy consciously and ask yourself questions
Before you buy something new, ask yourself: Do I really need this? Or can I combine it in multiple ways? Impulse purchases often lead to unnecessary waste.
With these tips, you will not only make your wardrobe smarter and more conscious, but you will also ensure that your clothes last longer. Small changes can make a big difference for the environment and your wallet!
