Van bamboeplant naar zacht ondergoed – hoe gaat dat proces in z’n werk?

From bamboo plant to soft underwear – how does that process work?

Bamboo underwear feels incredibly soft, is incredibly comfortable, and is often chosen for its comfort and the properties of the bamboo fiber. But how is bamboo actually harvested? And how does such a sturdy plant transform into that supple material that feels like a second skin? In this article, we explain the process, from bamboo plant to underwear, and highlight the choices made along the way.

What kind of plant is bamboo anyway?

Bamboo is a type of grass known for its rapid growth. After the plant is harvested, it naturally regrows from the roots, eliminating the need for replanting – a renewable resource: after harvest, the plant regrows from its root structure. Clothing is not made from wild bamboo from natural areas, but from bamboo grown specifically for industrial applications, with a focus on controlled land use.

How is bamboo harvested?

Bamboo is harvested once the stems are fully grown. Only the mature stems are cut; young shoots are left so the plant can continue to grow. The root structure remains intact, preventing soil depletion. This harvesting process requires relatively little intervention, and because only mature stems are harvested and the roots remain intact, the plant can re-grow without replanting.

From bamboo plant to clothing fiber

After harvesting, the bamboo stalks are chopped into small pieces. The cellulose is then extracted from the plant and processed into a soft fiber. Bamboo viscose is commonly used for clothing. In this step, the hard plant structure transforms into a smooth, supple material suitable for underwear, among other things. This is where the softness for which bamboo is known is created.

Why does bamboo underwear feel so soft and is it suitable for sensitive skin?

Bamboo fibers are naturally round and smooth. This means they chafe less against the skin than many other materials. The result is textiles that move smoothly and remain comfortable all day long. Bamboo is also breathable and wicks away moisture effectively. This makes it particularly pleasant for people with sensitive skin or for whom comfort is truly important. It's no wonder you often hear: once you wear bamboo underwear, you won't want to wear anything else.

Bamboo underwear compared to conventional cotton cultivation

Bamboo grows quickly and can be harvested several times a year. This makes its cultivation different from conventional cotton farming. This doesn't mean every bamboo garment is automatically sustainable, but it does mean the material provides a strong foundation for conscious choices.

Ethical choices in the production process

Bamboo Basics collaborates with a manufacturer that uses a closed-loop system. This system captures and reuses the chemicals used in the viscose process, preventing them from being released into the environment. Within this production process, chemicals from the viscose process are captured and reused in a closed loop system.

Why Bamboo Basics chooses bamboo

From the way bamboo grows to how the fiber ultimately feels against the skin: every step in the process contributes to the beautiful end result. The controlled harvest, the careful processing, and the properties of the bamboo fiber combine to create underwear that is soft, comfortable, and stays comfortable and beautiful even with daily use and washing. For us, bamboo is a fast-growing raw material and we work with a producer who uses a closed-loop viscose process. And it's this combination that makes bamboo the natural choice for Bamboo Basics.
